Empowering Zambia: Dr. Xu Zhiyong's Agricultural Resilience and Energy Freedom Initiatives
On May 25, at the invitation of the International Center on Small Hydropower (ICSHP) under the United Nations, Dr. Xu Zhiyong, Chairman of Ai-BESS Technology, delivered a lecture to the training session titled “Zambia Workshop on Climate Change Adaptation, Agricultural Resilience, and Renewable Energy Applications.” Themed “Powering Zambia’s Future: Building Agricultural Resilience and Energy Freedom through Renewable Energy,” the lecture provided a deep dive into the intersection of technological innovation, sustainable development, and Africa’s urgent needs.

This training program focused on how to promote green agricultural transformation and optimize energy structures amid climate change. Attendees included Zambian government officials, experts from the energy and agriculture sectors, and technical specialists. Drawing on Ai-BESS Technology’s on-the-ground experience across multiple African countries, Dr. Xu demonstrated how clean energy solutions can significantly enhance agricultural productivity, boost climate resilience, and deliver affordable and reliable energy to rural communities.

Zambia, a landlocked country historically reliant on hydropower, was hit by a severe drought in 2024 that pushed the Kariba Dam to its limits. The result was rolling blackouts lasting up to 21 hours daily, severely disrupting the economy and everyday life. This crisis, however, became a catalyst for Zambia’s accelerated energy transformation, prompting rapid investments in solar energy, microgrids, energy storage, and other diversified solutions. Achieving universal electricity access by 2030 has now become a firm national development goal.
Dr. Xu's lecture covered seven core topics:
Zambia’s Energy and Agricultural Challenges: Analyzed structural issues such as limited grid coverage, rural energy access, and energy bottlenecks in agricultural production;
Overview of Renewable Energy Technologies: Presented collaborative pathways involving solar PV, DC microgrids, and small hydropower;
Applications of Clean Energy in Agriculture: Shared practical cases from Africa involving irrigation, cold chains, and post-harvest processing;
Energy Freedom and Community Empowerment: Introduced the “DC Ecosystem” model to support off-grid, energy-autonomous rural communities;
Zero-Carbon Transportation and Rural Distribution: Explored how electric mobility supports logistics and uplifts agricultural value chains;
Policy and Implementation Roadmap: Proposed actionable policy suggestions regarding incentives, standards, and capacity building;
Interactive Dialogue with Participants: Engaged in dynamic exchanges on implementation strategies, technology transfer, and partnership models.
During the session, Dr. Xu highlighted the Ai-BESS Technology-developed DC ecosystem, which has already been successfully deployed in countries such as Cameroon and Kenya. This solution delivers clean, reliable, and cost-effective electricity to underserved areas, promoting energy equity and improving community livelihoods.

Dr. Xu emphasized that clean energy is not merely a technology—it is a powerful tool for social transformation. It can build agricultural resilience and empower rural communities across Africa with self-determined development opportunities.
The session received high praise from attendees and brought renewed momentum to China-Africa cooperation in clean energy, sustainable agriculture, and knowledge exchange. Moving forward, Ai-BESS Technology will continue advancing green energy projects across Africa, working hand-in-hand with global partners to build a greener, smarter, and more inclusive energy future.
